Born 1941 in Pietersburg (Polokwane).

Louis van Heerden holds degrees of BA Fine Arts and BA Honours from the University of Pretoria and carried out postgraduate research at the Akademie in Antwerp, Belgium. He taught art for a number of years at Pretoria Boys High School until he decided to devote himself full-time to painting. He was National President of the SA Association of Arts. He spent several years in Switzerland and France, and worked for several months in the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris.
